Inside the Making of One-of-a-Kind Cut Autograph Cards Featuring Kobe Bryant, Babe Ruth, Madonna & More

There is something uniquely nerve-racking about taking a pair of scissors to an authentic autograph from someone like Kobe Bryant, Babe Ruth, Paul McCartney, Madonna or Bobby Orr.

But that's also where some of our favorite projects at Reclaim Customs begin.

In our latest behind-the-scenes video, we're opening up the shop and showing the process of turning authentic signatures from some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment into one-of-a-kind cut autograph trading cards.

If you've ever wondered how custom trading cards are made, this video gives you a closer look. We don't reveal every secret of our process, but you'll see plenty of the actual cutting, assembly and craftsmanship that goes into building these pieces from individual components into finished custom cards.

And this batch includes some pretty incredible names.

Kobe Bryant: Back to Lower Merion

The Kobe Bryant autograph immediately gave us direction for the design.

The signature dates back to his days at Lower Merion High School, before the championships, the Lakers and the Hall of Fame career. One of the coolest details is Kobe's "#33" inscription, the number he wore at Lower Merion.

Rather than putting a high school-era autograph into a card focused on his NBA career, we wanted the entire piece to tell the story of where it came from.

We built a custom booklet around Kobe's Lower Merion years, creating a piece that takes the autograph back to the very beginning of his basketball story. It's a great example of what we try to accomplish with cut autographs. The signature shouldn't simply be inserted into a card. Whenever possible, the card itself should provide context and help tell the story behind it.

Madonna: An Autograph Straight Out of the '80s

The Madonna autograph came from a signed letter, which gave us an opportunity to completely change gears creatively.

For this piece, we leaned heavily into an 1980s pop aesthetic, incorporating pink holographic foil and a design that feels appropriately bold, colorful and unmistakably of that era.

It's very different from the sports pieces we typically build, and that's exactly what made it fun.

Working with musicians, actors and other entertainment icons allows us to approach trading card design from an entirely different perspective. Instead of trying to make Madonna fit into the traditional language of a sports card, we wanted the card to feel like Madonna.

Paul McCartney: The Beginning of a Legendary Career

Paul McCartney's signature is simply a beautiful example of his autograph, so we wanted the finished card to give it the presentation it deserved.

We chose a younger image of McCartney from the period when The Beatles were beginning their rise to worldwide fame, allowing the finished piece to capture him closer to the beginning of one of the most influential careers in music history.

There's something especially interesting about holding an authentic signature from someone whose career has spanned generations. Building a custom card around it allows us to take that autograph out of isolation and give it a visual story.

Babe Ruth & Aaron Judge: "Titans of Power"

One of our favorite concepts from this group brings together two generations of Yankees history.

Babe Ruth and Aaron Judge. Two Yankees. Two generations. Two very different hitters.

We titled the dual cut autograph piece "Titans of Power."

Ruth, the legendary left-handed slugger who became one of the defining figures in baseball history, is paired with Judge, the towering right-handed power hitter who has written his own chapter in Yankees history.

A lefty and a righty, separated by generations, together representing two of the most powerful sluggers ever associated with the New York Yankees.

The dual format allowed us to tell that story visually while letting two historic signatures share the same piece.

Bobby Orr: A Vintage Hockey Approach

We round out the group with another all-time great: Bobby Orr.

For Orr, we went in a completely different direction again, constructing a vintage-inspired cut autograph card featuring him with the Boston Bruins.

The goal was to create something that felt appropriate to Orr's era rather than forcing a modern design around a vintage hockey legend. The finished piece has an old-school feel that complements both the autograph and the imagery.

Inside the Custom Card-Making Process

One of the things we're asked about most often is how custom trading cards are made.

While we're not going to give away every technique we've developed over the years, this video provides a rare look inside the Reclaim Customs production process.

You'll see portions of the cutting and assembly process, how authentic autographs are incorporated into each design, and how individual components eventually come together to create a finished piece.

There's considerably more involved than simply designing something on a computer and printing it. Every autograph presents a different challenge, particularly when the original signed material may be decades old or historically significant.

For us, the goal is to make the physical autograph feel like it has always belonged in the card.
