When a Trading Card Becomes Something Bigger: Two Young Athletes, Two Incredible Stories

At Reclaim Customs, we make a lot of pieces featuring some of the biggest names in sports.

But sometimes, the most meaningful projects aren't about legends at all.

They're about kids.

Our latest video follows two custom card projects featuring young athletes at very different points in their journeys. One is a baseball player competing at the All-Ripken Futures level. The other is a young soccer player whose custom card eventually became part of a surprise he'll probably never forget.

And while the finished pieces are pretty damn cool, the stories behind them are even better.

Making a Young Baseball Player Feel Like a Big Leaguer

There's something special about seeing yourself on a trading card for the first time.

For Mason Moyer, we had the opportunity to create a jumbo custom card celebrating his participation in the 2025 All-Ripken Futures.

We approached the project the same way we would any other piece coming through Reclaim Customs.

This wasn't supposed to look like something someone made for a kid on their home printer.

We wanted it to feel legitimate.

We wanted the design, construction and presentation to make Mason feel like the athlete on the front of a real premium collectible.

Because when you're a young athlete, moments like these are a big deal.

You don't know where the story is going yet.

Maybe baseball becomes something Mason plays for a few more years. Maybe it takes him somewhere none of us can predict.

Either way, this particular moment in his life happened.

And now there's something tangible that preserves it.

In the video, we take you inside Reclaim Customs and show you how we brought Mason's piece together.

Then There's Sawyer's Story

The second project took that idea in an entirely different direction.

Sawyer Walton is a young soccer player, and his custom piece was built around his experience with Chicago Fire FC.

The centerpiece immediately makes the card different: a massive embroidered Chicago Fire patch embedded directly into the piece.

It's bold. It's oversized. And it's exactly the kind of artifact that allows us to build something that feels less like a traditional trading card and more like a display piece.

But the best part of Sawyer's project wasn't what happened in our shop.

It was what happened after the card left it.

The Surprise at the Card Shop

Sawyer didn't simply receive his finished card in the mail.

Instead, the people around him helped turn it into an experience.

He was surprised with the finished piece at his local card shop, and we were fortunate enough to get video of the moment.

That's the part of this video I especially love.

You can spend hours designing something. You can obsess over materials, construction, placement and all the tiny details that go into making the final piece look right.

But eventually you hand it to the person whose story it represents.

And their reaction tells you whether you got it right.

Why These Projects Matter

It's easy to understand why someone would want a custom card featuring Babe Ruth, Kobe Bryant or another legendary athlete.

Their stories have already been written.

With kids, you're capturing something completely different.

Their stories are still being written.

That's what I think is so cool about projects like these.

We're freezing a moment in time.

A tournament.

A team.

A season.

An accomplishment.

A jersey.

A kid who loves a sport.

Years from now, these pieces aren't simply going to be custom trading cards. They're going to remind these families exactly who these kids were at this particular moment in their lives.

And you can't know today how meaningful that might eventually become.
