When Does a Collectible Become Art? Darren Rovell Shows Us His Incredible Collection
At what point does a collectible stop being simply a collectible and become a piece of art?
That was the question at the center of our latest episode of the Reclaim CoLab Podcast, and we brought in the perfect guest to help us answer it: Darren Rovell.
Darren has spent decades at the intersection of sports, business, history and collectibles. As a longtime sports business reporter, founder of CLLCT, and one of the most recognizable voices in the collectibles world, he also happens to be an incredibly passionate collector himself.
Our conversation began with a question we've been thinking about quite a bit at Reclaim CoLab:
Can collectibles be cultural assets? And when does a collectible become art?
Darren gave us his answer, but that was only the beginning.
Then Darren Started Showing Us His Collection...
At some point during the conversation, the episode turned into an unexpected tour through Darren's personal collection.
And Herman and I were basically along for the ride.
Darren began pulling out pieces and sharing the stories behind them, and one thing became obvious very quickly: this wasn't simply a collection of "stuff."
These were artifacts.
Pieces connected to people, moments, brands, sports and culture. Objects whose significance goes far beyond whatever material they're made from or what someone might be willing to pay for them.
For us, it brought the entire premise of the episode to life.
A painting can matter because of the artist who created it, the story surrounding it, the era it represents and the emotional response it creates.
So why couldn't a collectible do the same thing?
The Story Is What Changes the Object
That's ultimately what makes this conversation so fascinating.
Collectors understand something that can sometimes be difficult to explain to people outside the hobby: the object itself is only part of the value.
The story matters.
The provenance matters.
The person who owned, wore, signed or used it matters.
The moment in history it represents matters.
And sometimes all of those things come together in a single object that deserves to be viewed as something more than memorabilia sitting on a shelf.
It becomes a cultural artifact.
Maybe even art.
You Need to See What Darren Brought Out
We could list everything Darren showed us, but that would ruin half the fun.
There were several moments when Herman and I simply sat there in awe as Darren pulled out another piece and explained the story behind it.
If you're a collector, a sports fan, an art enthusiast, or someone fascinated by the way ordinary objects can become extraordinary because of the history attached to them, this is an episode you're going to want to watch.
Come for the debate about whether collectibles can be considered art.
Stay for Darren Rovell casually turning the podcast into a private tour of his personal collection.
