An 11-Year-Old, Tiger Stadium, and Don Mattingly's Rookie Bat: A Memorabilia Story You Won't Believe!

Some sports memorabilia stories are almost too incredible to believe. In our latest episode of the Reclaim CoLab Podcast, collector Phil Reggio shares an unforgettable story from 1983 involving an 11-year-old boy, Detroit's historic Tiger Stadium, and a game-used rookie bat belonging to New York Yankees legend Don Mattingly. It's the kind of story that reminds us why the memories behind sports collectibles can be just as valuable as the artifacts themselves.

A Kid, a Baseball Stadium, and an Unbelievable Adventure

Imagine being 11 years old, attending a baseball game at Tiger Stadium, and somehow finding yourself standing on the same field as Major League Baseball players.

For most kids, that would be a dream come true.

For Phil Reggio, it became a reality.

During a visit to Tiger Stadium in 1983, Phil managed to make his way over the concrete barrier separating the stands from the field. Once there, he blended in with the activity around him, essentially pretending to be a bat boy during batting practice.

What happened next would become a story he'd remember for the rest of his life.

Phil eventually made his way back into the stands with a baseball bat. But this wasn't just any bat. It turned out to be a game-used rookie bat belonging to Don Mattingly, who would go on to become one of the most beloved players in New York Yankees history.

How did an 11-year-old pull this off? How did he end up with the bat? And what makes this particular piece of baseball history so extraordinary?

You'll have to hear Phil tell the story himself.

Even our co-host, Detroit Lions legend Herman Moore, was left in awe as the details unfolded.

The Stories Behind the Collectibles

While the Mattingly bat is certainly a highlight of the episode, Phil's collection includes other remarkable pieces of sports history.

Throughout our conversation, he shares memories and stories connected to some of the incredible artifacts he's acquired over the years.

At Reclaim Customs, we spend our days working with authentic sports memorabilia, transforming meaningful pieces of history into custom collectibles. One thing we've learned is that the story behind an artifact often makes it even more special.

Where did it come from? Who owned it? What happened on the day it was used? What personal connection does the collector have to it?

Those are the details that transform an ordinary object into something extraordinary.

Phil's collection is a perfect example of that connection between sports history and personal memories.

From Tiger Stadium to the Detroit Lions

About halfway through the episode, our conversation takes a turn from baseball to football, and specifically, the Detroit Lions.

With Herman Moore as our co-host, we have the unique opportunity to explore Detroit football through the eyes of someone who actually lived it.

Herman reflects on his playing days with the Lions, sharing his perspective on the organization, the experiences that shaped his career, and the memories that have stayed with him long after his playing days ended.

But we don't stop with the past.

We also dive into the current Detroit Lions, discussing what's happening with the team and hearing Herman's thoughts on where things stand today.

For longtime Lions fans, it's an opportunity to hear firsthand insight from one of the franchise's most recognizable players.

And for newer fans, it's a chance to connect today's excitement surrounding the team with the history that helped shape it.

Why We Love Conversations Like This

One of our goals with the Reclaim CoLab Podcast is to explore the people, stories, and experiences that make the sports memorabilia hobby so fascinating.

Sometimes that means talking about the latest developments in trading cards and collectibles. Other times, it means sitting down with someone who has an unbelievable story that deserves to be heard.

This episode gives us a little bit of everything.

An extraordinary piece of Yankees history. A childhood adventure at Tiger Stadium. Remarkable memorabilia and the memories attached to it. And an extended conversation about the Detroit Lions with one of the team's all-time greats.

Whether you're a baseball collector, a lifelong Lions fan, or simply someone who appreciates a great sports story, this is an episode you won't want to miss.
