From the evolution of live breaking to the excitement of delivering unforgettable hits, David Yarger joins the Reclaim CoLab Podcast for a behind-the-scenes look at one of the hobby's most popular experiences.

Sports card collecting has changed dramatically over the past decade. What was once primarily a hobby built around purchasing packs, opening boxes, and chasing favorite players has evolved into an industry where collectors can participate in live breaks from virtually anywhere in the world.

Live breaking has introduced a new level of excitement, entertainment, and community to the hobby. But what does that experience look like from the other side of the camera?

On the latest episode of the Reclaim CoLab Podcast, hosts Eric Wagenmaker and former Detroit Lions wide receiver Herman Moore welcome David Yarger, Director of Breaking at Dave & Adam's Card World, for a conversation about the business of breaking, the relationships behind it, and what makes the experience so rewarding.

From a Small Card Shop to an Industry Leader

Founded in 1991 in Buffalo, New York, Dave & Adam's Card World has grown from a small local card shop into one of the most recognizable names in the collectibles industry.

With a major online presence, retail locations in the United States and Europe, and an extensive selection of trading cards and memorabilia, Dave & Adam's has established itself as an important destination for collectors around the world.

As Director of Breaking, David Yarger works directly in one of the industry's most exciting and rapidly evolving segments.

Eric has also appeared alongside David and his team on Dave & Adam's The Chase several times, making this episode an opportunity to reverse roles and welcome David into the Reclaim CoLab conversation.

How Breaking Has Changed the Hobby

For those unfamiliar with the concept, a sports card break typically involves collectors purchasing spots in a shared box or case opening. Instead of buying an entire box themselves, participants receive cards based on the teams, players, or other assignments associated with their spots.

It's a format that has transformed opening trading cards into a shared experience.

Collectors can watch products opened live, interact with hosts and fellow participants, and experience the anticipation of potentially pulling a rare autograph, valuable rookie card, or one-of-one collectible.

During the conversation, David shares his perspective on how breaking has evolved, what makes it appealing to collectors, and how it has become such an important part of today's hobby.

Who Really Wins When a Collector Hits Big?

One of the most memorable moments of the episode came from an unscripted question Herman asked David.

"Do the breakers win, or do the customers win?"

It wasn't a question about money or who comes out ahead financially.

Herman wanted to know who experiences more joy when a collector lands an incredible card: the customer receiving that once-in-a-lifetime hit, or the breaker who gets to reveal it?

The question caught David's attention, and he took a moment to think before answering.

His response?

The breakers win.

David explained that he's naturally a giver. For him, there's something incredibly rewarding about being the person who gets to deliver that excitement to someone else.

It's a perspective that reveals something important about the people behind the camera.

While collectors understandably celebrate pulling an extraordinary card, the person opening that pack can experience a different kind of satisfaction. They get to witness the excitement, share in the moment, and help create a memory that a collector might carry for years.

For David, that's one of the things that makes breaking so special.

More Than Just Opening Packs

From the outside, breaking might look relatively simple. Open a box, reveal the cards, and ship them to the participants.

But behind every successful breaking operation is a combination of preparation, product knowledge, logistics, entertainment, and customer relationships.

At a company the size of Dave & Adam's, those responsibilities take on an entirely different scale.

The conversation explores the work behind the scenes, the role breakers play in creating an enjoyable experience, and the importance of building lasting relationships with collectors.

It also offers a glimpse into the personalities that make the hobby more than simply a marketplace for buying and selling cards.

The Future of Breaking

As the sports card industry continues to evolve, live breaking remains an important part of how collectors discover products, interact with other enthusiasts, and experience the thrill of opening cards.

What will breaking look like in the years ahead? How will the experience continue to change? And what makes a successful breaker stand out in an increasingly competitive industry?

David brings a firsthand perspective to these questions, along with a genuine enthusiasm for the people who make the hobby what it is.

And as Herman's unexpected question revealed, sometimes the most meaningful part of collecting isn't the value of the card itself.

It's the joy of sharing the experience.
